Initial situation & challenge:
Making complex data worlds understandable
PLEdoc GmbH, based in Essen (North Rhine-Westphalia), is a subsidiary of Open Grid Europe (OGE), one of Europe's leading transmission system operators, specializing in infrastructure data. With around 250 employees, PLEdoc documents and digitizes technical networks and facilities—from gas and telecommunications infrastructure to IT-supported geodata processes. In a highly data- and process-oriented environment, it is crucial that all employees understand how their tasks are interlinked with other areas. The challenge was to present the multitude of responsibilities, interfaces, and systems in such a way that a clear overall understanding could be achieved—across departmental boundaries.
The solution: A comprehensive visual overview of business processes
Together with PLEdoc, a big picture was developed that clearly illustrates all relevant areas and how they interact. The picture shows how network documentation, plant documentation, and network information are linked to IT and data management, controlling, project management, human resources, management, and the works council. This makes it clear how PLEdoc intelligently networks data, systems, and people—and how each individual task contributes to the functioning of the entire company.
Individual scenes
At PLEdoc, management, the works council, and staff are committed to active, supportive cooperation. Strategy is not just planned here, but shaped together on a daily basis—with a clear focus, open communication, and the aim of creating good conditions for everyone.
The focus is on the intelligent use of data: processes are analyzed, digitally refined, and systematically networked. This transforms information into structured, usable added value for the entire company.
Before construction work begins, PLEdoc ensures safety by providing accurate network information and on-site instructions. Cable routes are made transparent, risks are minimized, and all parties involved are reliably informed—right where it counts: on the construction site.
This is how the big picture came about
The big picture was created in close cooperation with the PLEdoc teams. In several rounds of consultation, areas of responsibility, processes, and interfaces were structured and translated into a visual logic.
1. Analysis of the business divisions
First, all relevant functions—from network documentation to supporting areas such as controlling and human resources—were collected and described in terms of how they interact. Based on this, the following was created
2. Structuring the interfaces
The next step was to define internal and external interfaces in order to map networking with partners and customers as well as cross-departmental collaboration within the company.
3. Visualization & Fine Tuning
On this basis, a practical and future-oriented presentation was created, individually tailored to the structures and culture of PLEdoc.
Effect & Results
The Big Picture is now used across departments and serves as a central communication tool within the company. In particular, it supports the onboarding of new colleagues, facilitates internal training, and creates a common basis for strategic discussions.
The big picture helps to make our complex structures understandable.
"The big picture helps us to present our complex structures and processes in an understandable way—for new employees as well as for long-standing colleagues."
