Vision for the future 2050 Munich Public Utilities

A big picture was created for Stadtwerke München that visualizes the 2050 vision of the future as a holistic city model. The aim was to combine technological transformation, climate neutrality, and civic participation in an understandable overall picture.

Initial situation & challenge: Creating orientation in new working environments

As a municipal utility and service provider, Stadtwerke München (SWM) is a central pillar of public services in Munich and the surrounding area. It supplies the city with electricity, water, heat, mobility, and telecommunications. With the heating transition and the goal of providing CO₂-neutral district heating by 2040, as well as the expansion of renewable energies, SWM is actively driving change. Photovoltaics, geothermal energy, wind power, and combined heat and power are being further developed, as are smart metering systems and digital infrastructures. The challenge was to translate this comprehensive transformation into a convincing vision of the future. The image had to be technically credible and at the same time clearly convey how a climate-neutral Munich works – with citizens as active participants, clean mobility, and networked energy systems.

The solution: a big picture as a visual savings bank world

The big picture shows Munich as a vibrant, interconnected energy system in 2050. It illustrates how energy, heat, mobility, and communication are intertwined—day and night, around the clock. Photovoltaic systems on roofs, wind energy, and geothermal energy are depicted, as are electricity and heating networks, e-mobility, and intelligent sensor technology. Citizens appear not only as consumers, but also as co-creators who generate their own electricity or use sharing services. The big picture is complemented by an interactive click picture. Clickable points allow users to explore topics and future projects in greater depth – from renewable energies and smart metering systems to sustainable neighborhood solutions. An accompanying video animation guides users step by step through the content and makes the connections intuitively understandable.

This is how the big picture came about

In order to present the vision for the future in 2050 in a structured manner, the big picture was developed in close consultation with experts from SWM.

1. Planning & Coordination

Key areas of action such as energy generation, the heat transition, mobility, and digitalization were defined and recorded in terms of their interaction.

2. Visualization & fine-tuning

The city of Munich was designed as a recognizable space. Infrastructure, buildings, and transport axes form the stage for the energy system of the future.

3. Digital expansion

In addition, a clickable HTML5 format (click picture) and a video animation were created to explain the content step by step.

Effect & Results

The Big Picture serves as the central strategic image of the 2050 vision for the future. It provides orientation and helps to make SWM's long-term development comprehensible.

"Fromthe initial consultation to the final design, we felt we were in excellent hands."

BigPictury has brought our vision for the future in 2050 to life in an impressive way. Thanks to the Big Picture, more than 10,000 employees now understand at a glance where SWM is headed and how all areas contribute to this. We chose Big Pictury because the team not only has experience with municipal utilities and the energy world, but can also translate complex strategies into clear and appealing visuals. This strength was confirmed throughout the entire project: flexible, collaborative, and with valuable insights that go far beyond traditional graphic design services. From the first meeting to the final draft, we felt we were in good hands—and the result speaks for itself: a strategy image that provides orientation, strengthens identification, and impressively conveys our vision for the future.
