Visualizing E-Learning Roles

Digital learning environments are transforming roles, responsibilities, and competencies in the insurance industry. To provide greater clarity, the Vocational Training Center of the German Insurance Industry (BWV) collaborated with the expert team on learning systems and educational technologies to develop a role model for e-learning. Big Pictury translated the text-based concept into a clear Big Picture that illustrates relationships, areas of responsibility, and competencies at a glance.

Initial situation & challenge:

A Role Model for Digital Learning

The Vocational Training Center of the German Insurance Industry (BWV) e.V. is the central vocational training association for the insurance industry in Germany. Through its team of experts in learning systems and educational technologies, the association promotes the transfer of knowledge related to digital learning, e-learning, and modern educational technologies. The project began with a text-based concept outlining areas of responsibility and roles in e-learning. While the content was substantively sound, it needed to be presented in a clearer, more accessible, and more engaging manner to facilitate wider adoption within the industry. At the same time, the goal was to illustrate these roles not in isolation, but within their broader contexts, workflows, and future developments.

The Solution: A Visual Map of E-Learning Roles

The Big Picture provides a clear overview of the key roles in digital learning and supplements each scenario with activities and competencies. The layout makes workflows and interfaces easy to understand, while the AI Barometer shows the extent to which artificial intelligence can transform each role.

The further development of digital learning systems requires a clear integration of subject-matter requirements, technical functions, and user-oriented applications. Data-driven analytics, interface management, and system maintenance lay the foundation for stable learning platforms and future-proof digital educational offerings.

In addition to planning and delivering digital or hybrid learning sessions, it becomes clear just how important clear processes and reliable communication are. Coordinated preparation, support, and evaluation ensure that learning formats can be organized efficiently and carried out smoothly.

(Digital) Learning Facilitator
In digital learning environments, personalized guidance becomes a key factor for success in terms of orientation, interaction, and understanding. Through synchronous and asynchronous support, learners receive targeted assistance and are better able to apply the content to their own learning process.

This is how the big picture came about

Through a structured process, the existing technical concept was translated into a visual narrative. The focus was on clarity, technical precision, and ease of use across both digital and print formats.
1. Workshop & Analysis
To begin with, the expert team’s existing content was reviewed, organized, and translated into a visual framework. Areas of responsibility, competencies, and role relationships were structured in such a way that they could be clearly depicted within a big-picture view.
2. Prototyping & Iteration
Based on the role structure, initial scenes, visual concepts, and layouts were developed. Through several rounds of consultation, role titles, responsibilities, competencies, and the presentation of the AI Barometer were refined to ensure that the visualization remains technically accurate while remaining easy to understand.
3. Feedback & Finalization
The final "Big Picture" was prepared in several file formats for digital use and printing. It was presented at a forum during the insurance industry’s annual education conference and discussed with industry representatives.

Effect & Results

The Big Picture establishes a common visual framework for discussing roles, competencies, and developments in e-learning within the insurance industry. It makes a complex technical concept quickly accessible and helps the BWV provide guidance in a dynamic educational field. At the same time, it clearly highlights the importance of artificial intelligence for future learning roles.

"Avaluable foundation for discussion and guidance"
