Initial Situation & Challenge: Many Educational Pathways Under One Roof

The Franz-Binder Comprehensive School combines a Realschule, a Gemeinschaftsschule, and a Werkrealschule under one roof. Students learn in small, manageable learning communities and can work at different levels depending on their individual learning paths. At the same time, the school aims to keep the options open for as long as possible regarding which educational path and which diploma is right for each child.

It is precisely this diversity that makes the school model unique—but also one that requires explanation. Different educational tracks, learning levels, pathways to graduation, learning phases, and forms of individualized support are all intertwined. The challenge, therefore, was not to simply juxtapose individual concepts, but to present the school as a cohesive system.

The Solution: Presenting the School as a Unified Whole

The Big Picture depicts the Franz-Binder Comprehensive School as a shared space for learning and development. At the center is the school building with its learning centers and open learning areas. Surrounding it, individual scenes illustrate how students experience their journey through school. The imagery ranges from arrival and orientation to learning paths, learning teams, learning phases, coaching, and cooperative learning methods, all the way to hands-on learning, career guidance, and graduation and transition to the next stage. This makes it clear that the various opportunities are part of a shared development process—from initial orientation to personal future prospects.

The guiding principle “Personal – Connected – Courageous. We Shape the Future.” serves as the overarching theme.

Individual scenes

The school system in Baden-Württemberg offers a variety of educational paths and degree options. The Franz-Binder Comprehensive School brings these paths together under one roof and enables students to learn at the G, M, or E level, depending on their individual development.

In the learning communities, students learn in small, manageable groups. Established learning teams provide structure and a sense of belonging, and form the foundation for collaborative learning, personal development, and reliable support in everyday school life.

Learning coaching focuses on the students’ individual goals and progress. Together, they reflect on learning strategies, agree on next steps, and gradually build responsibility for their own learning process.

This is how the big picture came about

Together with the Franz-Binder-Verbundschule, we translated the various educational pathways, learning styles, and pedagogical focuses step by step into a shared visual language. Our starting point was the unique characteristics of the school model and the question of how individual learning paths could be presented in a way that is easy to understand without losing sight of the school’s shared identity. From initial content clusters and scene ideas, the final “Big Picture” emerged through an iterative process.

1. Organize Content

To begin with, the school’s core themes were identified: educational pathways, learning centers, individualized support, learning phases, coaching, career guidance, and graduation and transition to further education. This established a clear foundation for the educational framework.

2. Develop a visual style

The content was then translated into specific scenes and compiled into an initial overview. The focus was on the students’ development—from their arrival and orientation to their individual paths to graduation.

3. Feedback & Finalization

Over the course of several rounds of discussions, scenes, focal points, and details were further developed. Step by step, this gave rise to a cohesive school environment that clearly connects the educational concept with the various learning pathways.

Effect & Results

"The Big Picture" brings together the diversity of the Franz-Binder Comprehensive School into a unified visual framework. Different educational pathways, learning styles, and opportunities for development are not presented in isolation, but are shown as parts of a shared school philosophy.

This creates an overview that provides guidance and helps clearly communicate the school’s unique model to students, parents, teachers, and partners.
