Initial situation & challenge: Explaining a vision for everyone—from the shop floor to management

Lohmann & Rauscher is one of the leading solution providers and a reliable partner for customers in the healthcare sector. The supply chain bears a special responsibility in this regard: it ensures that medical professionals and patients are reliably supplied with high-quality products at all times. With growing internationalization, increasing demands on quality, sustainability, and digitalization, and the increasing strategic importance of the supply chain, it became clear that individual optimizations were not enough. A comprehensive view of all areas was needed—from planning and purchasing to production and logistics to customers and patients.
The main challenge was to present these complex interrelationships in an understandable way and to create a common point of reference: an image that shows how all functions interact, how they contribute to the overarching vision, and how the supply chain will continue to meet the highest demands in the healthcare sector in the future.

The solution: A strategic management tool

The Big Picture creates a common frame of reference for Lohmann & Rauscher's entire supply chain. It brings together strategic guidelines, operational functions, and key future topics in a clear overall structure.
Instead of presenting individual areas in isolation, the image shows how planning, purchasing, production, logistics, sustainability, and people work together—with the common goal of providing reliable support to healthcare professionals and patients.
The big picture serves as a visual guide: it facilitates understanding of complex interrelationships, promotes a common language across functions, and helps managers and teams to contextualize decisions within the overall supply chain vision.

Individual scenes
Two people are looking at a laptop with the title "AI / predictive planning," which shows charts on "Current needs" and "Future needs."
Forward-looking, networked planning that provides early guidance and enables informed decisions along the supply chain. Key figures relating to external influencing factors, delivery availability, and market changes can be used to provide appropriate impetus to the supply chain.
Production hall with workers, robots, and screens; "Maintenance Recommended" and "Production Management" are visible.
Structured processes, standardized procedures, and the use of digital systems: lean principles, automation, and transparent key performance indicators interact and demonstrate how efficiency, quality, and scalability can be considered together. The focus is not on individual machines, but on the interaction between people, processes, and systems.
Central building with "customer lock-in approach" symbol, connected to patient, pharmacy, and logistics.
The supply chain does not end at the goods issue stage, but becomes part of the processes on the customer side. This shows how operational excellence, service quality, and partnership work together to improve the quality of life of those affected.

This is how the big picture came about

The big picture emerged through close collaboration with executives. First, strategic guidelines and key supply chain issues were structured and prioritized on a "content board." The content was then refined in several coordination meetings and supplemented with content from internal feedback loops.

1. Workshop & Analysis

In joint workshops with specialists and managers, processes, systems, and stakeholder structures were collected on a content board—the basis for the initial image structure.

2. Prototyping & Iteration

Based on the content board, an initial draft of the big picture was created. The image was adjusted, supplemented, and optimized in several rounds of iteration—with a focus on comprehensibility and completeness.

3. Feedback & Finalization

The final version was discussed extensively internally. Direct feedback from all areas ensured that the image promotes understanding of change among all stakeholders and is accepted.

Effect & Results

The Big Picture has established itself as a strategic management tool and common point of reference for Lohmann & Rauscher's international supply chain. It promotes understanding across country, location, and functional boundaries and creates a common basis for strategic discussions. As a visual framework, it connects global orientation and local responsibility. Employees and managers recognize how their respective roles are embedded in the overall international structure and what contribution they make to supplying customers, healthcare professionals, and patients.

"A strategic management tool"

Thebig picture has helped us understand our international supply chain as a shared system. It shows that every function and every role is important—and that security of supply can only be achieved if we function as a whole. The image shows how our daily actions interact and how each and every one of us contributes to supporting healthcare professionals and patients. As a shared visual basis, it strengthens our sense of unity and provides orientation across locations and functions."
