Initial Situation & Challenge: Complex actions require a shared understanding
As an internationally active pharmaceutical company with a clear mission to provide patients worldwide with high-quality therapies and thereby sustainably improve their quality of life, medac aims to demonstrate how all areas of the company work together toward this goal. Behind this lies a complex value chain in which many departments work together in a precisely coordinated manner—from analyzing market needs and feedback from patients and healthcare providers, through product development and regulatory coordination, to production, quality assurance, storage, logistics, and finally ensuring the supply of medications.
These functions work together every day. Yet it’s not always immediately apparent how individual tasks, interfaces, and decisions are interconnected and how they collectively contribute to the vision of being the “Company of Choice.” Every action, every coordination effort, and every decision helps ensure that patients ultimately receive reliable care. The big picture should therefore not only explain processes but also bring the shared purpose to life—and show how every employee contributes to the bigger picture and thereby helps realize the vision.
The Solution: From Individual Contributions to Collective Value Creation
The Big Picture makes the complexity within the company tangible, provides direction, and shows how many individual contributions come together to create shared value.
This section illustrates how individual tasks, responsibilities, and decisions at medac interlock to ensure that medical needs are met with a reliable supply of life-saving medications for patients. The mission serves as a daily driving force and is illustrated with concrete examples from everyday work. This makes our approach and sense of responsibility tangible: Every role, every step in the process, and every decision helps ensure that medac can provide people worldwide with high-quality therapies. At the same time, the big picture illustrates value creation as a cycle: real-world experience feeds back into new developments, products are improved, and the supply chain is continuously refined. This creates a shared vision that makes the bigger picture clear—and shows why every contribution matters.
Individual scenes
The individual scenes in “The Big Picture” illustrate just how diverse the contributions at medac are and how closely they are interconnected. They show that value isn’t created in a single place, but rather through the interplay of many people, departments, and decisions. Whether it’s Medical, Production, Quality, Logistics, or other support functions: each scene represents an important part of our shared mission. At the same time, the details invite us to take a closer look, discover connections, and discuss how our own work contributes to the bigger picture.
Staying close to the market and engaging with treating physicians, patients, and other stakeholders is essential for better understanding needs, further developing products, and continuously improving care.
Development, planning, and quality assurance come together to create a reliable product. In production, expertise, precision, and responsibility work in tandem to ensure that therapies are delivered safely and to a high standard.
At the heart of all our processes is the human being. Everything that medac develops, designs, manufactures, and delivers contributes to providing reliable care for patients and improving their quality of life.
This is how the big picture came about
Various perspectives on the subject matter were gathered during several workshops. This led to the formation of a project group that, together with consultants from Big Pictury, consolidated these perspectives, further refined the requirements, and developed them into their final form.
1. Workshop & Kickoff
First, the vision, mission, and value chain were analyzed. The goal was to distill the key messages so that they would be understandable to different target audiences.
2. Visual Elements & Basic Logic
A visual framework was developed with the patient at its center. The company’s mission, various departments, and the value chain were arranged around this center to illustrate the interconnections within the organization.
3. Finalization & Rollout
The final image was unveiled during a company town hall meeting. It will serve as an important tool in the future for continually reminding us of our vision and the purpose of our work.
Effect & Results
The Big Picture helps medac foster a shared understanding of its vision, mission, and value creation. It illustrates how all departments work together and how each individual contributes to the bigger picture. It has a wide range of applications: from onboarding new employees and leadership development programs to strategy development and both internal and external communication. In this way, the Big Picture becomes a shared foundation for understanding connections and situating one’s own role within the overall process.
