Initial situation & challenge: Creating orientation in new working environments

With its new headquarters, Stadt-Sparkasse Solingen has introduced modern working environments: open areas, flexible zones, new types of rooms, and changed working methods. For many employees, this meant a big step away from traditional office structures toward a new, more open savings bank world. The challenge was to explain the architecture, spatial logic, and possible uses in such a way that all employees quickly understood how the new headquarters was designed, which areas could be used for what purposes, and how collaboration would change in the future.

The solution: a big picture as a visual savings bank world

To make the new headquarters easier to understand, we developed a big picture that combines architecture, room types, and working methods in a clear visual world. The illustration shows all the important areas—from the customer hall and consultation zones to flexible workstations and quiet rooms—so that employees can immediately recognize their new working environment. The big picture explains not only rooms, but also usage, processes, and collaboration: Where do I work? Where do I consult? Where do we exchange ideas? Where can I find what? With the supplementary click picture version, employees can explore the new Sparkasse world digitally and easily access details.

The need for change arises from comprehensive technical system renewal and the end of the life cycle of existing systems. These developments require strategic realignment and the implementation of future-proof solutions.
Three people are sitting at a table, juggling red balls, the symbol for Dten, and thinking about ideas.
In addition to the technical challenges involved in managing large amounts of data, it is clear that the way humans handle data is often suboptimal. This is symbolically represented by unstructured balls, which indicate a lack of organization and inefficient use of information.
Three people fill colorful balls, symbolizing data, with user profile icons into a funnel labeled "data cleansing."
In the future, the conscious handling of data will create a significantly improved basis for the development and operation of new systems. This data-driven approach will also be favored above all by the mindset of those involved.

This is how the big picture came about

The big picture was developed in collaboration with the project team at Stadt-Sparkasse Solingen. Architectural plans, room concepts, and usage ideas were translated step by step into an understandable visual world of savings banks. Several rounds of iteration resulted in an illustration that provides orientation and makes the new main branch easily accessible.

1. Planning & Coordination

Floor plans, room zones, and usage concepts were collected and structured with the project team.

2. Visualization & fine-tuning

The architecture and work areas were illustrated in detail and combined to form a clear overall overview.

3. Digital expansion

With the Click Picture version, employees can interactively explore rooms and functions and delve deeper into them.

Effect & Results

The Big Picture makes it easier for employees to get started in the new headquarters and shows at a glance how rooms, work areas, and zones are used. It helps teams find their bearings and integrate the new ways of working into their everyday lives more quickly. The interactive version enhances this effect and brings the world of Sparkasse to life digitally.

It helps our employees familiarize themselves with the new working environments and quickly find their way around the new premises. The interactive version in particular offers real added value, as it provides further information and makes it easier to find your way around."
