Initial Situation & Challenge: Many Invisible Services
Stadtwerke Bad Homburg is a regional energy provider with a long tradition and strong ties to the city and the region. Under the motto “My Energy—Naturally From Here,” the focus is on personalized service, security of supply, fair service offerings, and customer-centricity.
The challenge was to convey the full scope of the company’s operations in an accessible way. Many of its services remain invisible in everyday life: drinking water production, quality monitoring, grid planning, household connections, outage management, and natural gas transfer stations. It was precisely this complexity that needed to be made tangible without lengthy texts or presentations.
The Solution: A Visual World of Public Utilities for Bad Homburg
"The Big Picture" translates the corporate world of Stadtwerke Bad Homburg into a detailed, regional visual landscape. Key services such as consulting, billing, sales, energy efficiency consulting, maintenance, metering, training, and grid operations are highlighted. At the same time, the illustration features regional landmarks such as the White Tower, the Spa Park, the Church of the Redeemer, the train station, and the Seedammbad. The result is an overall image that combines technical content, local identity, and customer focus.
Individual scenes
In sales, it’s clear how Stadtwerke Bad Homburg explains its offerings in a personal and approachable way. Whether it’s electricity, gas, heat, water, cooling, or energy services—the Big Picture supports conversations with customers, business partners, and future employees.
Bad Homburg’s landmarks and attractions bring the Stadtwerke’s deep roots in the region to life. The Kurpark, the Elisabethenbrunnen, the Kaiser-Wilhelms-Bad, and the Seedammbad all demonstrate that the Stadtwerke has a strong local presence and is an integral part of the cityscape.
Consulting and billing involve direct contact with customers. This scene shows how the municipal utility company clearly explains its services, answers questions in person, and provides reliable service related to energy, water, and other utilities.
This is how the big picture came about
The Big Picture was developed through a collaborative process involving several rounds of consultation. The goal was to focus on the most important content while also incorporating all relevant areas of the company.
1. Organize Content
The process began by compiling key assets, services, landmarks, and infrastructure areas. The goal was to highlight what the municipal utilities do—from real estate and networks to customer service and energy and water supply.
2. Development of the Visual World
Over the course of several iterations, we evaluated which elements should be presented and where a narrower focus was needed. We utilized existing meeting structures to present the status of development internally and gather feedback from the organizational units.
3. Finalization
The final scenes were designed so that the various departments are represented in the imagery and the overall concept is embraced by the employees. This created a visual foundation that can be used in a variety of ways, both internally and externally.
Effect & Results
Today, the Big Picture is an integral part of Stadtwerke Bad Homburg’s corporate communications. It is used throughout the building, in meeting rooms, in the lobby, for recruiting, at career fairs, during sales meetings, and in public communications. In this way, it provides guidance, sparks conversation, and fosters a strong, shared vision of what Stadtwerke Bad Homburg accomplishes.
“HighlightingWhat Municipal UtilitiesDo”
“A municipal utility does much more every day than meets the eye. With ‘The Big Picture,’ we can show at a glance who we are, what we make possible, and why our customers are in good hands with us here locally. It’s a powerful communication tool for us—whether in sales, recruiting, or when engaging with the public.”
