Linking the municipal utility services to Germersheim’s iconic landmarks, neighborhoods, and regional characteristics
Initial Situation & Challenge: One City, Many Responsibilities
Stadtwerke Germersheim supplies the region with energy and drinking water, operates key infrastructure, and handles areas such as wastewater treatment, network planning, and outage management. At the same time, as an employer and training provider, it is firmly rooted in the local community.
However, many of these services take place behind the scenes and are rarely perceived in everyday life as a cohesive contribution.
The challenge was to clearly consolidate the broad range of tasks without isolating the individual topics from one another. At the same time, the image was intended to be highly recognizable and to highlight the close connection between Stadtwerke and Germersheim.
The Solution: A Visual Map of Local Government Services
"The Big Picture" weaves together the various roles of the municipal utilities into a vibrant, overarching narrative. The individual scenes link the municipal utilities’ key services with well-known locations and regional characteristics of Germersheim. In this way, complex tasks become tangible, and the municipal utilities are presented as a reliable partner for public services and the future.
Individual scenes
Municipal heat planning forms the foundation for a climate-friendly and future-proof heat supply. To this end, existing infrastructure, local potential, and future needs are systematically identified and integrated.
Forward-looking grid planning takes into account technical requirements, expansion goals, and regional conditions. This results in high-performance, reliable grids that ensure a secure supply in the future.
The headquarters was illustrated faithfully based on the actual building of Stadtwerke Germersheim. This creates a high level of recognizability and a direct connection to the company and its location.
This is how the big picture came about
First, the key services provided by the municipal utility company, as well as the region’s iconic locations and landmarks, were compiled. Building on this, a visual identity was gradually developed that combines technical content with local identity.
1. Workshop & Analysis
The relevant subject areas, services, and areas of responsibility of the municipal utilities were structured collaboratively. At the same time, a selection of distinctive buildings, neighborhoods, and landscape features was compiled to clearly identify Germersheim.
2. Prototyping & Iteration
The individual topics were presented in about 14 vivid scenes and arranged on a simplified regional map. Through several rounds of consultation, the themes, connections, and weightings were refined to portray this diversity in a way that is both clear and dynamic.
3. Feedback & Finalization
Once the content was approved, all scenes were developed in detail and combined into a cohesive illustration. Captions, branding, and local details were given the final touches, resulting in a versatile overall image.
Effect & Results
The “Big Picture” illustrates the broad range of services provided by Stadtwerke Germersheim and establishes a direct connection to the city and its residents. It can be used in various communication contexts and clearly demonstrates how many different tasks work together to ensure a reliable and sustainable supply.
"Clear Communication for Our Entire Region"
“Our responsibilities are diverse and not always easy for outsiders to grasp. With ‘The Big Picture,’ we now have a clear and understandable communication tool that brings together our services, our responsibilities, and our connection to Germersheim into a single, comprehensive overview. We were immediately impressed by the result, and it provides us with a strong foundation for discussions with residents, employees, and partners.”
