Initial Situation & Challenge: Finding Your Way Amid Change
Stadtwerke München is one of the largest municipal energy utilities in Germany and is actively driving the transition toward a sustainable energy future. As part of the “NextLevEL” project, the procurement and logistics department was also fundamentally realigned to operate more efficiently, strategically, and with a focus on the future.
The challenge was to make this multifaceted transformation tangible: new organizational structures, digital processes, changing role definitions, and strategic objectives needed to be brought together in a way that was easy to understand. At the same time, it was essential to get employees on board and foster a shared understanding of the future direction.
The Solution: Visualizing the Transformation Process
The Big Picture illustrates the transformation of procurement and logistics as an integrated development process. It highlights the prevailing challenges, the individual phases of the change process, the key areas of action, and the target structure, placing them within the context of the overarching strategic direction.

This is how the big picture came about
We developed the big picture together with the SWM representatives through an iterative process. We collaborated to develop and refine the content, and then gradually translated it into a cohesive visual framework.
1. Collecting & Organizing
Over the course of several coordination meetings, the key elements, goals, and areas of focus for the transformation were compiled and translated into an initial visual framework.
2. Iteration & Development
Based on an initial draft, the Big Picture was further developed and refined through several rounds of review—with a focus on clarity and accessibility for various target audiences.
3. Feedback & Finalization
The final version was finalized and formatted for use in print and digital formats, allowing it to be used flexibly in communications.
Effect & Results
The Big Picture quickly became an important part of internal communication in the “NextLevEL” project. It facilitates cross-functional coordination, establishes a common foundation for discussions, and helps employees and managers communicate the complex change process accurately and consistently.
