Wedel Public Utilities at a Glance

In an increasingly challenging competitive and cost environment, Stadtwerke Wedel has further refined its strategic direction. In collaboration with E1 Management Consulting, Big Pictury developed a “Big Picture” that clearly illustrates the company’s structure, range of responsibilities, and key future priorities. This visualization helps employees better understand their roles while also providing a clear foundation for internal and external communication.

Initial Situation & Challenge: A Task Environment of Increasing Complexity

For over 100 years, Stadtwerke Wedel has been one of the leading regional gas, water, and energy providers in Schleswig-Holstein. In addition to traditional utility services, its portfolio now also includes energy services, fiber-optic technology, e-mobility, energy contracting, and decentralized power generation facilities.
As energy markets evolve, so do the demands placed on strategy, communication, and collaboration. Stadtwerke Wedel wanted to communicate its areas of responsibility, core processes, and corporate goals in a way that would help employees develop a shared understanding and enable customers and stakeholders to more easily grasp the company’s diversity.

The Solution: A Comprehensive Overview for Guidance and Collaboration

The Big Picture brings together the areas of responsibility of Stadtwerke Wedel into a clear, recognizable corporate identity. It illustrates core processes along the value chain, clarifies roles and interrelationships, and translates the core objectives—customer focus, local presence, and sustainability—into concrete scenarios. Local buildings, neighborhoods, and situations involving both residential and business customers foster a sense of connection and recognition. This creates a visual foundation that reduces complexity and facilitates discussions about ideas for the future and optimization.

This is how the big picture came about

The development process took place over the course of a few focused workshops. Big Pictury and E1 handled the facilitation, preparation, and follow-up, ensuring that the internal project team at Stadtwerke Wedel was involved in a targeted and resource-efficient manner.

1. Workshop & Analysis

At the outset, the current situation, the identity of Stadtwerke Wedel, and the vision for its future direction were analyzed. This process focused on key objectives, areas of responsibility, and target customers.

2. Prototyping & Iteration

In the next step, the core processes along the entire value chain were identified—from generation, engineering, and trading to sales, services, customer service, and meter reading operations. This information was presented in a clear, visual structure.

3. Feedback & Finalization

For the final visual concept, key local buildings, areas, and customer scenarios were recreated. This resulted in a “big picture” that brings the strategic direction to life while also fostering a strong sense of identification among employees, stakeholders, and customers.

Effect & Results

Stadtwerke Wedel uses *The Big Picture* across various channels—both internally and externally. It is used digitally, shared on social media, published in print, and displayed as a large-format print in office spaces on a permanent basis. In addition, it supports internal digitization projects and current campaigns.

"ComplexitySimplified Visually"

“Our employees are thrilled. The complexity of our industry—and the wide range of tasks performed by the municipal utility—was visibly simplified through ‘one image.’ We were able to explain the scope of the municipal utility’s work relatively easily to customers with less in-depth knowledge of the energy sector using the Big Picture.”
