Starting Point & Challenge: Visualizing the Value Proposition
WVV offers a wide range of services—from energy and water supply to mobility and recreational activities. Communicating this breadth of services in a clear and accessible way was a key challenge. At the same time, the goal was to highlight the specific contribution WVV makes to the quality of life in Würzburg. In addition to the functional range of services, the goal was also to highlight regional ties, commitment, and future-oriented topics—all embedded within the cityscape itself.
The Solution: Bringing Public Services to Life in the Urban Landscape
The Big Picture translates WVV’s entire portfolio of services into a cohesive visual landscape. Würzburg serves as the stage: infrastructure, services, and projects are directly situated within the cityscape and interconnected.
This creates an overall picture that shows how the individual services interlock—and what concrete benefits they provide for local residents. The Big Picture not only makes WVV’s role visible but also understandable.
Individual scenes
The sector encompassing electricity, water, district heating, and fiber optics demonstrates just how closely WVV’s various utility services are interconnected. It is clear that WVV does not merely provide individual services, but rather lays the technical foundation for daily life in the region and offers personalized advice to its customers.
Through trams, electric buses, car-sharing services, and charging infrastructure, WVV demonstrates how modern urban mobility is all interconnected. It becomes clear that sustainable transportation isn’t something to be considered in isolation, but rather functions as an integrated system designed to meet a variety of needs.
Through sports promotion, recreational activities, advisory services, and digital offerings, WVV demonstrates that it actively contributes to the quality of life in Würzburg beyond its traditional utility services. This creates the image of a company with deep regional roots that connects infrastructure, daily life, and community life.
This is how the big picture came about
In collaboration with WVV, the Big Picture was developed over several months through a coordinated, iterative process—from structuring the content to the final draft.
1. Collection & Organization
Initially, WVV’s wide range of services was consolidated and prioritized during joint meetings between WVV representatives and Big Pictury. Big Pictury then translated these themes into initial visual concepts, using a map of Würzburg as the basis for the Big Picture.
2. Iteration & Development
Building on this foundation, the visual structure, the selection of themes, and the scenes were developed step by step through several rounds of consultation. Buildings, infrastructure, and elements such as buses, trains, and electric charging stations were realistically illustrated based on photographic references provided by WVV.
3. Finalization & Conversion to Various Formats
Once the final version of the Big Picture was completed, the design was adapted for use in various media. This ultimately led to the creation of additional formats, such as an interactive click picture, large-format prints, construction fence banners, and fun activities for children, such as puzzles and coloring pages.
Effect & Results
Today, "The Big Picture" is a central component of WVV's communications—and makes an impact across a wide range of formats and settings. This effect is particularly evident due to its widespread use:
From executive presentations to construction fences in urban areas, from digital click-and-print images to coloring pages for children. The motif creates a consistent frame of reference that is repeatedly referenced—and thus leaves a lasting impression.
