Achieving greater impact together

With MOVE, the German Chemical Industry Association is strategically and organizationally repositioning itself. The big picture makes this change visible and shows how the various core functions will interact in the future, with the members at the center and a common goal: the best possible location conditions for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries in Germany.

Initial situation & challenge: An association is reorganizing

Companies in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries are under considerable strategic and economic pressure.
At the same time, expectations of the VCI are rising: The association's work is expected to become faster, more focused, more independent, and more effective. MOVE addresses precisely this need for change.
The internal employee survey also revealed clear areas for action: greater member orientation, shorter decision-making processes, a stronger focus on core competencies, and more agile structures.
The challenge was to bring together this multitude of changes in an understandable way and to create a common picture of how the VCI wants to work in the future.

The solution: MOVE as a shared vision

The Big Picture translates the VCI's strategic and organizational realignment into a cohesive visual narrative. The focus is deliberately placed on member companies, from SMEs to large corporations, and from the chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotech sectors.
Individual scenes
The members are at the heart of the big picture. SMEs and corporations from the chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotech sectors represent the diverse needs within the association. Their requirements guide the VCI's further development, from stronger networking to demonstrably added value from the association's work.
Political management connects the association's strategic themes with its political work. Positions and activities are to be coordinated more effectively, responsibilities more clearly defined, and the network between Berlin and Brussels strengthened. In the bigger picture, this becomes a concrete scenario that makes the path from association work to political impact visible.
Strategy, focus topics, and organizational development are closely intertwined at MOVE. Clear priorities and faster decision-making processes meet new roles, optimized processes, and greater adaptability. Thus, the diagram not only illustrates a new structure but also how collaboration and working methods within the VCI are to evolve.

This is how the big picture came about

The content for the Big Picture was condensed from the MOVE strategy, the results of the employee survey, and the new organizational structure. The goal was to develop a coherent visual narrative from numerous individual functions, responsibilities, and change initiatives.

1. Analysis & Structuring

Initially, MOVE's central tenets were identified: changing member expectations, necessary internal changes, and the new core functionalities. This resulted in a clear content hierarchy for the subsequent overall picture.

2. Visual translation & iteration

The strategic content was then translated into concrete scenes and a shared visual logic. The team members were placed at the center, while the various core functions were arranged around them as interconnected areas.

3. Feedback & Finalization

In subsequent rounds of voting, scenes, weightings, and connections were gradually refined. This resulted in an overall picture that clearly conveys both the new structure and the underlying idea of MOVE.

Effect & Results

The Big Picture creates a common visual reference point for MOVE. Instead of explaining the reorganization through organizational charts, individual measures, or abstract strategic concepts, it makes visible why the VCI is changing, how the new organization interacts, and what contribution the individual departments make.
This allows the image to provide guidance to employees and managers during the change process and at the same time serve as a common basis for discussions about the new organization.

“ A shared vision for change ”

“ The big picture makes MOVE tangible for us. It shows at a glance how our different tasks and core functions interact and what joint contribution they make for our members. Especially in a change process, this shared visual world helps us to create orientation, to communicate connections clearly, and to shape the change together. ”
Jochen Renz , Head of Strategy & Communication, German Chemical Industry Association
