The task – explaining district heating in simple terms and building trust
The Barth municipal utilities are facing the challenge of expanding the district heating network in a residential area while at the same time gaining acceptance and trust among citizens. This requires education: How does district heating work? Where does the energy come from – today and tomorrow? The Big Picture was intended to be a vivid communication tool that explains the connections at a glance, makes complex technology accessible and highlights the sustainable strategy behind the project.
Implementation – Big picture of district heating supply in Barth
Together with the municipal utilities, we developed an easy-to-understand visualisation that shows the entire district heating infrastructure in Barth – from heat generation and the pipe network to the house connection.
Key elements such as CHP units, boiler rooms, power-to-heat technologies and future energy sources such as PV, wind power and heat pumps are clearly integrated. The image shows not only technical components, but also real-life application scenarios in households – including hot water storage tanks, underfloor heating and electricity connections.
There is a particular focus on service: The direct heating service and 24/7 on-call service are depicted, as is the installation of the house connection station. This creates a comprehensive, identity-building image that inspires confidence and makes the benefits of district heating visible to citizens.
The big picture was already used at an information event for citizens, where it provided clarity and received positive feedback.

The big picture allowed us to convey our corporate philosophy at a glance: modern, sustainable and future-oriented heat supply for our city. The visualisation helps us enormously in making technical content understandable and communicating our district heating project transparently – both internally and externally.
